A guide to Abbotsford: Booklet publication

This assessment tasked us to create a publication based on a suburb that we’re not familiar with, so we could conduct our research observations without any bias or preconceived ideas of the direction of our publication. I chose Abbotsford, an inner city suburb located 11km north of my home. Upon visiting Abbotsford I immediately noticed how layered the suburb was, and I immediately knew I wanted to integrate this into my publication. Abbotsford feels like a collage of different suburbs all rolled into one, so this was the direction that I decided to go in. I took an almost juvenile approach to creating the booklet, using bits of sticky tape, Polaroids and ripped paper to piece the booklet layout together to reflect how it felt to walk around Abbotsford. Beautiful nature trails are less than a 5-minute walk from historical buildings, industrial factories, and warehouses. I also drew inspiration from the graffiti art abundant throughout Abbotsford in my typography. Creating overlapping and intertwining text with bright colours to achieve this effect in a more intentional way.
